Greetings from Downtown Waterville!
snowflake lights

Happy New Year! We saw lots of changes and exciting happenings in Downtown in 2007, including the sale of the Hathaway Shirt Factory, the Waterville Opera House's spectacular premiere of Fame Forever, several new and exciting restaurants, and the completion and dedication of the Lebanese Heritage Mural, just to name a few! Check out the Downtown Year in Review page of the WMSt web site for a more complete summary and a sneak peek at plans for 2008.

Each month we give a special shout out to one of our downtown businesses that goes the extra mile to contribute to the vibrancy and attractiveness of downtown. This month I would like to recognize GHM Insurance Agency. Bill Mitchell at GHM meticulously maintains his building, always participates in seasonal decorating programs, and consistently ensures that the sidewalk in front of his business is spotless and free of snow and ice. As you may have read in recent enewsletters, GHM also generously donated the use of their south-facing wall as the site for the Lebanese Heritage Mural and recently coordinated immensely popular horse-drawn sleigh rides as part of Alive After 5. Thanks, GHM Insurance Agency, for making downtown Waterville a more vibrant place to be!

Fri., Sat, February 1, 2 - 7:30 pm
Sun. February 3 - 2:00 pm

Neil Simon's Lost in Yonkers, set in 1942 Yonkers, New York, is about two young brothers who are forced by circumstances to live with their austere and demanding grandmother, their loving, high-spirited, and childlike Aunt Bella, and their tough-talking gangster Uncle Louie. While firmly anchored in time and place, the play's strength lies in its larger view of how human differences, pain and lots of humor go into the making of a family. It's an ageless and universal theme which Neil Simon pursued with great dramatic insight to win a Pulitzer Prize.

Fred Garbo
Fred Garbo Inflatable Theater
Presented by the Waterville Opera House
in partnership with The Waterville Public Library
January 27 at 2:00pm

A ten-foot cylinder slithers onto the stage and implodes, and before long the entire audience is playing catch with gigantic inflatable props! The big blow-up shapes shimmer, balloon, deflate and bounce in a rainbow of colors. Suddenly, the globulating red cube takes on a life of its own, rolling, gliding, tumbling in synch to the music, right up to the edge of the stage...
Fast-paced, energetic, universally engaging and theatrically clever, Garbo and Santos mesmerize their audience with imaginative imagery and artistic foolishness.

Seen on the Late Show with David Letterman, at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, on Broadway at the New Victory Theater and on stage and television the world over. Come to the theater and see Fred Garbo and Daielma Santos share their unique inflatable inventions.

THURSDAY EVENING CLASSES AT BLUE WAVE STUDIO
33 East Concourse, 2nd floor
Beginning Thursday, January 10:

6:15 to 7:15 - Beginner 2 Tango. This is a continuation of December's class or for those who have already learned the basics of Tango.

7:30 to 8:30 - Beginner 1 Swing. Swing is probably the most useful dance. No matter where you are, they're bound to play some Swing music! No experience necessary, just a desire to get up and dance.

Classes are still $25/person for the four week session.

SUNDAY NIGHTS AT THE CENTER
93 Main St., 1st floor
Beginning Sunday, January 6

6:30 to 7:30 - Beginner 1 Rumba. No experience necessary. Rumba is a slow, romantic Latin dance. Good for working on your Cuban Motion!

7:30 to 8:30 - Beginner 1 West Coast Swing/Hustle. We decided it would be fun to introduce people to a couple of different dances. West Coast Swing is a slinky dance that's usually done to slow bluesy type music. Lots of fun. Hustle is usually done to older disco-style music. Usually, when we hear these types of music, we just do East Coast Swing. This will give you another option! No experience necessary.

We're asking people to pre-register for the classes at The Center. Call Eva at 465-2088.

Classes are still $25/person for the four week session.

If you have any questions, call Bruce Olson at 861- 2723.

Lecture: Thursday, January 10, 7:00pm
Colby College Professor Bruce Rueger will present a lecture on the topic of "GEOLOGIC AND TOPOGRAPHIC CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED ON BENEDICT ARNOLD'S MARCH TO QUEBEC, 1775"

Regarded as one of the greatest military logistical operations in history, Benedict Arnold's March to Quebec passed through our backyards in the fall of 1775. The intent of this expedition was to secretly travel up the Kennebec, Dead and Chaudière Rivers and capture the city of Quebec from the British. If successful, expedition leaders hoped to convince the populace of Quebec to throw in with the American cause. The expedition sailed up the Kennebec to Gardiner, where sailing vessels were exchanged for bateaux. The poorly constructed, heavy bateaux were used to travel the rest of the journey. Even today, this region is recognized as a wild, untamed area, but in 1775, the natural vegetation and geology of the region significantly impeded the progress of the expedition. What was thought would take three weeks ended up taking two months and covered a distance more than twice what was anticipated. The geology and related topography of the Kennebec and the Dead Rivers played a significant role in this important event in American history. This and the changes to the river system in the Maine portion of the expedition in the last 232 years is the focus of this talk.
Co-sponsored by Colby College Goldfarb Center for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement.

"Best in Show"

Prissy poodles, droopy-eyed bloodhounds, and neurotic Weimaraners compete for the gold in this largely improvised comedy that takes place at the Mayflower Kennel Club. A yuppie couple, a fly fisherman, and a pair of hairdressers are a few of the pet owners who primp, pamper, and prime their pooches for the big day in this hilarious "dogumentary."

"Trekkies"

The definitive documentary about the largest fan phenomenon in pop culture history. For 30 years the adventures of Kirk, Spock, the U.S.S. Enterprise, and the subsequent crews, have been watched everyday by millions of fans worldwide. What clearly sets Star Trek apart are the fans: a group of people who are known as "Trekkies."
