Greetings from Downtown Waterville!

It is hard to believe that autumn is here, but the leaves are changing, the air is getting crisp, and the pumpkins and apples have appeared at the Farmers' Market.  You can also see the signs of autumn in our downtown storefronts, such as Paragon Shop and Adams and Worth, and Harvest Fest is just a couple of weeks away!  Read on to find out more about what you will find when you visit downtown Waterville this fall!  Also, don't forget to check out this month's Meet Me Downtown article featuring Kennebec Chocolates.

Kennebec Federal Savings Announces its Artist of the Month

Throughout September and October 2008, Kennebec Federal Savings will display at their Main St. branch the artwork of current Artist of the Month(s), Patricia L. Binette.  The public may view her paintings Monday through Friday during regular business hours.

Pat enjoys working with a variety of mediums and experimenting with different techniques and methods.  She believes they stimulate her creativity.  Over the last few years, she has been concentrating on pastels, and finds their spontaneity and color exciting.  She needs an emotional connection to her work, so she creates based on her personal life journey.  Painting is a way for her to communicate her thoughts and feelings, especially in her series paintings.  Her current series is the incubation stage.

Patricia is a founding member of the Waterville Area Art Society and has taught art in her Earth Spirit Studio for a number of years.  She receives a great deal of strength and inspiration from her students.  In turn, she says it is a privilege for her to pass on her knowledge, while encouraging pride in her students' artistic abilities.

Pat's work has been in many juried shows, including the National Juried Show, a great joy and honor for her.  Her paintings are in a number of collections throughout Maine and the United States.

For over four years, Kennebec Federal Savings and the Waterville Area Art Society have been working together to exhibit the work of local artists.  Numerous artists with many varying art forms and mediums have been displayed in the bank lobby, providing an opportunity for local people to enjoy fantastic pieces of art (paintings, photographs, quilts, needlepoint, etc.).

Blues Night Out at the Waterville Opera House
October 4, 2008, 7:30pm
Featuring Shemekia Copeland
and Mark "Guitar" Miller Band

Shemekia CopelandHere's an invitation to the blues! You are invited to the Waterville Opera House for an inspiring evening with one of the hottest female vocalists on the scene. Multiple Grammy-nominee and winner of just about every blues music award open to her, Shemekia Copeland is the real deal. Her passion for singing, matched with her huge, blastfurnace voice, gives her music the timeless power and heart-pounding urgency of a very few greats.

Although she often draws comparisons to Etta James, Koko Taylor, and Aretha Franklin, Shemekia's music comes from deep within her soul and from the streets she grew up on, where a daily dose of city sounds surrounded her.

An opening set from Maine's own Mark "Guitar" Miller and band will get us in the mood.

Jewelry in Style

by Kathy Corey, VP Merchandising

Mother Nature joins fall fashions. One of the most intriguing gemstones in the world is organically grown and literally comes from trees. Amber is the fossilized resin of pine trees th
Day's Jewelers Teardrop Pendantat contain plants or insects from tens of millions of years ago. The fossils that are encased in amber probably got there by adhering to the fresh, seeping sap. The sap later hardened and became a fossil, creating interesting one-of-a-kind amber gemstones.

Amber is beautiful lemon yellow to deep rich orange in color. The focus of colors on jewelry and the fashion runway is on turquoise, bright blue, yellow, and a palate of fiery sunset colors - reds, pinks, and oranges. Amber jewelry is the perfect accessory to enhance this fall's fashions. Many of our pieces are nature-inspired. To see our entire amber collection of jewelry come into Day's Jewelers on Main Street in Waterville.
