January 2010

Happy New Year!  We at Waterville Main Street are very proud of our accomplishments over the past year, including the launching of Barrels Community Market, the securing of a $500,000 Downtown Revitalization Grant, and the management of a vibrant calendar of events that included a performance by legendary blues musician Taj Mahal at the historic Waterville Opera House, just to name a few.  We are also proud of the many independent businesses that contribute to the vibrancy of Downtown Waterville and appreciative of all of you who patronize them.  Downtown revitalization is all about building community, and we are so happy to see ours continue to grow.

While we have a lot to celebrate about 2009, we also have many exciting projects and initiatives to look forward to in 2010 - from an exciting live music series to major facade rehabs, from the opening of new businesses to new bike racks and streetscape improvements, Downtown Waterville will be abuzz with activity this year.  As you know, the best way for you to hear about all of these developments is this e-newsletter!  We would love to share our monthly updates with as many people as possible, so we are asking you to help us grow our mailing list by using the "Forward email" link at the bottom of this email to invite your friends to sign up.

Spotlight on History: THE ELDEN-BOUTELLE-ARNOLD BLOCK
103-115 Main Street

Elden Boutelle Arnold BlockThe Elden-Boutelle-Arnold Block was built from 1886-1894. John Calvin Stevens was the architect for this Queen Anne style block.

W. B. Arnold, hardware dealer, built his third of the block in 1886-7. In 1948 103 Main Street was purchased. The second floor was used for their sporting goods and company offices. The Arnold Block was a hardware store and was probably the largest retail and wholesale store in the State of Maine. It closed its doors in 1962 because of increased competition. The senior Arnold continued the heating and plumbing supply business in the basement until his death in 1969. The building is still owned by the Arnold family.

Dr. Boutelle built the middle section in 1887 and leased it to the Bangor News Company. Alden & Deehan's Drug Store replaced that business in 1890. In 1892-3 the Boutelle Block housed Miss A. A. Gleason who sold "fashionable millinery".

Elden Boutelle Arnold block currentJ. F. Elden & Co. built the final third of this block in 1893. The Elden building on the corner of Temple & Main is the only section of the block that has retained its cast iron columns. It was home to J.F. Elden & Company purveyors of furniture, carpets, and house furnishings.

Today this block is home to a variety of businesses on the ground level, including Happy Trails, Head Quarters Hair Styling, Poulin Opticians, Earth Bound, and Jorgensen's Cafe, and offices and apartments on the upper floors.
